THE HELFORD

From the Helford River, a lush wooded world of inlets and creeks, of sub-tropical gardens and riverside villages to the dramatic clifftop views and walks around mainland England's most southerly point on the Lizard Peninsular, the Royal Duchy is indeed a county to be discovered.

Explore Helford Village with its riverside setting and the ancient churches of Mawgan, St. Anthony and Gweek - once a Roman port but today a cluster of boatyards and quays and home to the world renowned National Seal Sanctuary.

From the tiny villages of Constantine and Mawgan you can meander down gladed pathways to creeks such as Port Navas (pictured on the left) or Polwherveral with their oyster beds and yacht moorings or strike north from Mawnan Smith to the lush gardens of Penjerrick or south for the exotic gardens of Glendurgan or Trebah.

And no visit to the Helford is complete without a trip on the ferry across Helford passage and on to Manaccan Church with its 200-years old fig tree growing through its west wall.
